Now Google Chrome has been around for some time now, but I was running a Powerbook G4 and the nice people at Google built Chrome for intel-only Macs. I am a Safari user, have been for a couple of years now. I know, Firefox is the best and everyone should use Firefox. Unfortunately, Firefox and my computer never got along and the speed of Safari kept me coming back.

Listed below are things about my internet usage to help you understand where I am coming from:

1. I’m a heavy Google user. Gmail, Google Reader, Google Voice, Etc. All of my projects are ran on Google Apps for mail, calendar, contact and intranet management. As well as Ridgepoint runs everything on Google (for free by the way).

2. I build websites. Developer tools are important to me.

3. I like simplicity. Too much stuff to look at and deal with turns me off to any product for that matter.

Now to the pros and cons. The good stuff.

Pros

Sometimes it is just the little things that make a huge difference. Such as when I right click on a link to open it in the new tab and not a new window. Placing the option at the top of the list is a small thing that makes a huge difference.

Same developers tools as Safari which was nice to not have to learn again. The benefits of Chrome being built on webkit. Though the source view of a site is a huge step up from Safari with structure and color defined elements.

Now this one took me a couple of days to figure out, but I was stoked to find it. In Safari and Firefox (as far as I know) use a sperate field for searching with Google. You have your address bar and your Google search bar. Chrome puts the two together and it is a time saver. It is something that I always wanted in Safari.

Cons

I use 1password to manage all my passwords and identities for buying things and such. They don’t build a plugin for Chrome. Not a hit on Chrome, more on Agile Web Solutions. And for that one reason I will go back to Safari.

I don’t like the look of Chrome. I know you can apply different themes, but I still can’t think one that seems to work for me. Safari’s look is simple.

Bookmarks on the bookmark bar are a little of a pain to manage. Removing them takes a couple of steps, instead of just dragging them off the bar. Also, the “Other Bookmarks” button on the right should be much smaller or even non-existent. I add and remove bookmarks based on the project I am working on.

Those are my thoughts. Share yours.

I always have a fair amount of projects that I’m juggling at a time with their own fair share of administration stuff. That is where Google steps in or more specifically Google Apps. Instead of installing a exchange server for my email, calendar, and syncing needs. I am able to get a better system for a cheaper price, in most cases FREE, with Google Apps. No headaches. No problems. Just simple. And I love the word simple.

Everything from emails to calendars to intranets and docs can be done in the Google system and I’ve only been happy with the system. Everything can be synced to my phone and my computers and my info is always up to date.

If you aren’t a Google Apps user and want to be. I can set you up. Email me at josh@originalboxstudio.com. Non-profits: Google Apps are FREE, yes free, to you. Shoot me an email.
