Google Chrome: after a week, pros and cons
Tuesday, August 24, 2010 @ 1:06 pm by Josh Burcham
Now Google Chrome has been around for some time now, but I was running a Powerbook G4 and the nice people at Google built Chrome for intel-only Macs. I am a Safari user, have been for a couple of years now. I know, Firefox is the best and everyone should use Firefox. Unfortunately, Firefox and my computer never got along and the speed of Safari kept me coming back.
Listed below are things about my internet usage to help you understand where I am coming from:
1. I’m a heavy Google user. Gmail, Google Reader, Google Voice, Etc. All of my projects are ran on Google Apps for mail, calendar, contact and intranet management. As well as Ridgepoint runs everything on Google (for free by the way).
2. I build websites. Developer tools are important to me.
3. I like simplicity. Too much stuff to look at and deal with turns me off to any product for that matter.
Now to the pros and cons. The good stuff.
Pros
Sometimes it is just the little things that make a huge difference. Such as when I right click on a link to open it in the new tab and not a new window. Placing the option at the top of the list is a small thing that makes a huge difference.

Same developers tools as Safari which was nice to not have to learn again. The benefits of Chrome being built on webkit. Though the source view of a site is a huge step up from Safari with structure and color defined elements.
Now this one took me a couple of days to figure out, but I was stoked to find it. In Safari and Firefox (as far as I know) use a sperate field for searching with Google. You have your address bar and your Google search bar. Chrome puts the two together and it is a time saver. It is something that I always wanted in Safari.

Cons
I use 1password to manage all my passwords and identities for buying things and such. They don’t build a plugin for Chrome. Not a hit on Chrome, more on Agile Web Solutions. And for that one reason I will go back to Safari.
I don’t like the look of Chrome. I know you can apply different themes, but I still can’t think one that seems to work for me. Safari’s look is simple.
Bookmarks on the bookmark bar are a little of a pain to manage. Removing them takes a couple of steps, instead of just dragging them off the bar. Also, the “Other Bookmarks” button on the right should be much smaller or even non-existent. I add and remove bookmarks based on the project I am working on.

iPhone 4
Tuesday, June 15, 2010 @ 8:55 pm by Josh Burcham
Apple started accepting iPhone 4 reservations today. Now I normally don’t post on Apple stuff for a couple of different reasons, but this phone was too perfect to not post.

Now I will have the phone on the 24th, so FaceTime me with you’re going to get it right away! Here a link to Apple.com and below is the Keynote of the announcement.

Take away one thing… attention to the details is what make your product or ministry stand out among the rest.

We Live in a New World

Have you taken the plug and embraced social media? …Even my step-dad has a business blog. Now blogs are becoming old technology. Crazy to think about, huh? Best quote in the video was, “The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55-65 year-old females.”

Favorite Headers Thus Far
Monday, June 15, 2009 @ 10:35 am by Josh Burcham
This blog as been an outlet for my creative side: writing, photoshop, web design, etc. Allowing myself in a small way to keep up on my Photoshop skills (haven’t seen InDesign in a couple of months) and creativity. Not that these are that impressive, they aren’t. But it’s always interesting to look back on the past. These are the headers that seem to really pop (in no particular order):

AT&T, You Dropped the Ball
Saturday, June 13, 2009 @ 11:26 am by Josh Burcham

With the WWDC keynote buzz starting to die down and the iPhone 3.0 software being released this coming Wednesday. iPhone users are starting to focus on the 100 features being added to the iPhones operating system, but with the announcement of 3.0 came major disappointments for AT&T customers.
MMS not till the end of the summer and no tethering support right now. Two major features to iPhone 3.0 not being able to be used in the US. AT&T you’re going to have some pissed off customers.
I’ve been satisfied with AT&T service. No, they don’t have coverage like Verizon in Phoenix, but I been nothing short of thrilled with their customer service. If you have ever dealt with Verizon’s customer service, you would know that you aren’t a valued customer. I’ve had hundreds of dollars removed from my bill, money I should of had to pay due to the terms in my contract. But the lady on the other side of the phone said and I’ll quote her here, “don’t worry about it, it wasn’t your fault. I’ll just remove those charges.” I’ll stay with AT&T because of that one “wow” experience.
But with all that nice stuff said, AT&T you completely dropped the ball on iPhone 3.0 and I think you are going to pay a major price in the long run. A lot of your customers aren’t happy as it is, due to coverage issues and now adding this. Apple might start looking somewhere else to sell their phones and if that is Verizon, you might see a mass exodus.
Hesseldahl from Business Week spoke with AT&T about the missing support for 3.0 features:
AT&T expects to support MMS and video sharing by “late summer,” AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told me. The delay is related to some internal system upgrades to the network. He added that tethering will be offered at some time in the future, but he couldn’t give me a date.
Read the entire article here: Apple-AT&T: Hints of Strain.
If I was AT&T and I wanted to avoid a riot, I might be busting my butt to get the “internal system upgrades” done this week for the 3.0 launch. If not, I believe you just sealed your coffin. That exclusivity that Apple is offering you, might be going bye bye. Apple builds it’s software for it’s hardware and it’s hardware for it’s software to give their customers the best experience. They went with one carrier to do the same, give their customers the best experience with the iPhone, iPhone 3G and the new iPhone 3Gs. Now that experience isn’t happening due to your inability to keep up. I’m just putting two and two together, but I think you already know it. Apple has checked out.

It Is Born
Saturday, May 9, 2009 @ 2:34 pm by Josh Burcham
The new blog theme has been born. Started with Human3rror‘s I Love Content theme and I edited a fair amount. I’m still pretty new to this whole CSS and php, for that matter html as well, there are probably some broken things around. If you find them, let me know.
Overall, I’m actually happy with this one. The last theme just didn’t seem like it was me and this one feels much closer.
