Stealing Content: Biggest Launch!
Saturday, April 10, 2010 @ 10:33 am by Josh Burcham
Seth Godin is a man we ministry leaders can learn from. If you don’t follow his blog, you need to. The best part…his posts are short! Right to the point leadership and marketing principles. He recently posted some thoughts on the iPad launch that Apple recently had and I couldn’t pass up sharing them as a great ministry/church lesson. Here is an excerpt:
- Don’t try to please everyone. There are countless people who don’t want one, haven’t heard of one or actively hate it. So what? (Please don’t gloss over this one just because it’s short. In fact, it’s the biggest challenge on this list).
- Make a product worth talking about. Sounds obvious. If it’s so obvious, then why don’t the other big companies ship stuff like this? Most of them are paralyzed going to meetings where they sand off the rough edges.
- Make it easy for people to talk about you. Steve doesn’t have a blog. He doesn’t tweet and you can’t friend him on Facebook. That’s okay. The tribe loves to talk, and the iPad gave them something to talk about.
- Be willing to fail. Bold bets succeed–and sometimes they don’t. Is that okay with you? Launching the iPad had to be even more frightening than launching a book…
- Don’t worry so much about conventional wisdom. The iPad is a closed system (not like the web) because so many Apple users like closed systems.

Marketing Genius
Saturday, August 29, 2009 @ 1:35 pm by Josh Burcham

As I entered my local QuikTrip this morning I found a fresh made QuikTrip Kitchen’s sandwich being handed to me. As well as, a coupon for another free one and a later time. I’ve had their sandwiches before and in terms of quality I would compare it to the cheaper version of Paradise Bakery sandwiches. In other words, they’re good and don’t belong in a typical convenience store. But QT isn’t your typical convenience store and they’re marketing is geniuses.
When they first opened stores here in Phoenix they gave away free mugs that could be filled at any QT location for free. You could fill is with anything, soda, slushes, coffee, etc. It was awesome. But their marketing wouldn’t work if they didn’t back up that marketing with a great and consistent product. Their plan is to give away that great product and get people hooked and coming back. But their key is the great product not the marketing behind that product.
Now, church. How can you create your great products? What do you need to start focusing on and what do you need to stop?

Stealing Content: Yes, You're Boring
Sunday, June 7, 2009 @ 8:50 pm by Josh Burcham

If you don’t read Seth Godin’s blog, you need to. The knowledge that man is filled with is impressive. Here is a snippet from a recent post, You’re Boring:
You’re boring
Sorry, someone had to say it.
Your products are predictable. Your insights are recycled. You don’t bring surprise with you when you enter a room.
That’s why people are ignoring you.

VitaminWater: It's an Addicition
Wednesday, April 15, 2009 @ 1:36 pm by Josh Burcham
My addiction to VitaminWater by Glaceau, a CocaCola company, is bad. I’ll go to QT (Quicktrip) and load up on this stuff. “Energy” blows to other out of the water. If you haven’t tried it, try it! I have a problem with it though… I drink them too fast. So, last night I stocked up at Walgreen at 50 cents a bottle (that’s a deal)!

On another note: I probably shouldn’t share this, but whatever. The company that created VitaminWater also makes SmartWater. I started buying SmartWater because of what the bottle looked like. I could careless about the water itself and I’ll pay the $1.50 for the bottle. I know, I have a problem. But here is how I look at it: if you think your product is the “best”, don’t you think that you should create the best packaging, cover or marketing for that “best” product. If you don’t invest in your marketing/product development; do you really believe in your product?
“Our product speaks for itself.” No it doesn’t. Not until someone tries it. “I can package poop in great packaging, but it’s still poop.” True, but your “best” product won’t last after the first try from your customers. The two go hand in hand. Great products, need great marketing and product development.
Now apply that to the church.

Hang in there Jack
Thursday, February 26, 2009 @ 11:09 am by Josh Burcham
Have you seen Jack in the Box’s new viral marketing campaign around their beloved CEO, “Jack,” being in the hospital? Great concept to get buzz around for their restaurants. My first exposure to the campaign was at the end of one of there commercials, flashed on the screen “filmed before Jack was admitted into the hospital.” With just shy of 5,000 followers on Twitter and almost 12,000 Facebook friends. They are gaining speed and excitement. You can even write a get well note to Jack Box. It hasn’t made me want to eat there, probably due to me watching Super Size Me, it’s caught my attention.
It’s a great example for a company to think outside the box for penny’s on the dollar.
